Between the Sheets with Amanda Dolan
Romance Narrators: Ok, we need to hear your Barbara Streisand, Shakira and Cher impersonations. How do we make this happen?
Amanda: Two Words: APAC Karaoke.
Romance Narrators: You were born in NYC, moved to California, now you're back in NYC. Can't stay away huh? What makes you bounce between coasts?
Amanda: "Bouncing between coasts" sounds like I'm almost bicoastal (which would literally be a dream!) I love everything New York City has to offer, but my family is back in southern California and I'd love to see them more than just a few times a year.... So who knows, LA narrators watch out I might be coming for you.
Romance Narrators: You have worked on stage a whole lot. Can we expect to see you onstage anytime soon?
Amanda: I am doing my first foray into solo work in two weeks! My show is called, "My Life in Art: A Last Ditch Effort" and it's about the struggle of what it means to be an artist with sections of Patti Smith's book "Just Kids" onstage! The show is on November 18th at 5pm, part of The Pit's Solcom Festival. Please come! It's gonna be a lot of fun! Solocom 2018: Sarah Puls | Amanda Dolan
Romance Narrators: That’s so exciting! Break all the legs, girl. Talk to us about Kim Holden's BRIGHT SIDE. This book comes up in online audiobook groups when people are in search of a beautiful "ugly cry" book. Would you say that is a good descriptor?
Amanda: I would! It's so funny because you never really know how a book is going to land when you're recording it! I had a really amazing thing happen last week- I noticed people in the Aural Fixation group talking about the book (namely how good the male narrator is) So, I slyly added that "the female narrator ain’t bad either". Kim Holden sees my post, finds out I'm Lidia Dornet (still no idea why I used a pseudonym on that one!), and sends me the SWEETEST message. Getting great feedback from authors is one of my most favorite aspects of this career. I love doing someone's story justice!
Romance Narrators: You're an improvisor, yes? Tell us about the work you do with People's Improv Theater, aka, "The Pit."
Amanda: I am an improvisor, and I have been on a house team at the PIT since January. It's been a really interesting experience. I think one of the most challenging aspects of it for me, is not just making stuff up onstage-- but navigating the dynamics of working with a team of personalities (read: white comedy dudes!)... But also, as narrators - we work alone most of the time, ya know? Anyway - if anybody ever wants to check us out, we perform on Wednesday nights at the PIT in NYC! It's free and really fun!
Romance Narrators: You got to collaborate with Kristen Wiig and Ethan Hawke recently on SANDRA. Fancy! What is Sandra? How can we listen?
Amanda: I did all the promos for this amazing Gimlet podcast! It's a radio-drama format, and I got to play a snootier version of an Alexa in advertisements for Audible (oh the irony) that play throughout the episodes. You can check it out here: https://www.gimletmedia.com/sandra
Romance Narrators: You are a musician as well? What instrument? How long have you been playing?
Amanda: I have been playing the guitar, alone in my room for myself since I was 19! It's one of my favorite ways to let out some steam (and hopefully not annoy my neighbors too bad!)
Romance Narrators: What exciting audiobook projects do you have on the horizon?
Amanda: I just wrapped a really cool YA urban fantasy series for Audible called The Wardens of the West by Annabel Chase. It's kind of like an homage to Harry Potter, Twilight and Lord of the Rings! It's great.
Romance Narrators: Where can people keep up with you online?
Amanda: My instagram is ApandaRollin, or you can check my website www.Amanda-Dolan.com
