Between The Sheets With Melissa Moran
Romance Narrators: Ok, important things first. Apparently we all just skyrocketed to one degree of separation from Kevin Bacon, because you are married to him. No, you're not married to him. Kyra Sedgwick is married to him. But word on the street is you've met him, yeah? How did that go down?
Melissa: We might need to work on the Kyra situation because I’m really feelin’ the name, Melissa Bacon. Sooooo….Kevin has a band called ‘The Bacon Brothers’ with his brother, whatshisname??? Let’s face it, nobody cares. I used to work at a radio station and they came in for an interview. He was very gracious and polite and, sadly, did NOT smell like bacon. I can’t find the picture at the moment, but I swear this all happened. Except the part where I’m not really married to him because I am…shhhhh.
Romance Narrators: You’re secret is safe with us. But a radio station, huh? What was that world like? And you won a CMA and an ACM Award for your work??? Tell us everything!
Melissa: Everything? You might need a round of therapy afterwards. I started my radio career at 18 years old and spent two **cough, cough** decades in the business. I mean…years, sure. I’ve done Top 40, Hip Hop, Rock, Hot AC, and finally Country where I won those prestigious awards. I didn’t have to sing or anything! I have some incredible memories from my radio days and I’ve had the chance to meet a lot of cool people, but it wasn’t something I could see doing forever. Everything came together when I found audiobook narration. I consider myself insanely lucky that I’ve managed to find success and happiness in two different careers.
Romance Narrators: Clearly the microphone loves you. Speaking of former jobs and passions... you seem to have had many. And what a wide range: Animation! Madonna impersonator! Junior Cole Bros. Clown! Did you seek out these gigs? Or did the gigs find you?
Melissa: Sometimes I feel like I’ve lived 9 different lives. Yes, I studied animation in Philadelphia with the goal of one day working in a small-ish production house like how ‘Ren and Stimpy’ started before the Nickelodeon take over. Is my sense of humor starting to make sense now?? I impersonated an 80’s ‘Lucky Star’ Madonna on a Carnival Cruise ship because… obviously (epic eye roll), and my mother kept winning radio contests when I was a kid thus my stint in the circus as a junior clown. I still have some lingering trauma, but hey… I got to ride an elephant!
Romance Narrators: I figure we should get all the childhood trauma out at once. We hear you lost a citywide spelling bee in the 5th grade on the word "handsome?" Ouch. It must be so painful for you when it comes up time and again in your romance work! (PS- how did you spell it?)
Melissa: Yeah, Erin. Thaaaaaanks for bringing this up. You know how you have that one defining childhood fail that haunts you for the rest of your life? For me, it was the spelling bee. I could spell ANY FREAKING WORD that came my way, but hansome? Oh my god, I still can’t spell it. I can still hear that stupid bell and my mother’s gasp. It was only the second round, Erin. The second!?!? H-A-N-S-O-M-E. Ugh. I…can’t…even…
Romance Narrators: Well you certainly have a way with words now. You are one of the newest members of our sexy Romance Narrator collective. So psyched to have you with us! What drew you to become part of a group like this?
Melissa: Romance is my favorite genre. Period. I love listening to it, reading it, and narrating it. There’s just something about a well-written story that makes you feel like you’re falling in love all over again. It’s so addictive! So, when I discovered this group of like-minded and incredibly talented narrators, I knew I had found ‘my people’. I think what’s so special about this group is that we’re all each other’s biggest fans and I’m so honored to be a part of it. Although, I’m still convinced you only let me in because I’m married to Kevin Bacon. Ugh. Seriously, I’m not supposed to say anything.
Romance Narrators: Do you have an author wish list? I.e. someone's work you'd love to narrate? How about co-narrators? Anyone you'd be psyched to be paired with?
Melissa: I’ve had the great pleasure of working with some fabulous and ridiculously talented authors. Many on my ‘wish list’ already work with other Romance Narrator talent, so... I won’t name names, but… if you’re reading this? Yep - I want to work with you. But keep Erin. She’s real nice. Except when she brings up painful childhood memories. That’s just wrong.
As for co-narrators? Any dude on the RN site would be amazing. I’ve worked with Greg Tremblay and he’s the bee’s knees. Joe Hempel is also one of my favorites. He kinda sounds like Tom Cruise to me…minus the jumping on couches. That would not translate well to audio.
Romance Narrators: You have an adorable son named Maks. Does he have any idea what Mommy does for a living?
Melissa: Yes and no. He’s going to be 6 next month, so his knowledge of books includes, “Peppa Pig” and “Curious George”. I’m pretty sure he thinks I sit in a booth for 8 hours a day talking about pigs and bananas. Hmmm…that’s actually pretty darn close if ya think about it.
Romance Narrators: Pigs and bananas indeed. Ok, let's see how good you are at telling the future. When this interview posts, most of us will have just returned from APAC and The Audies in NYC. Did we have fun? What kinds of shenanigans went down? Who won the awards?
Melissa: Oh, I’m not supposed to talk about most of it, but I can tell you that it was all memorable except for the parts I can’t remember. Do you remember that part where they created a special surprise award for me at the Audies??? Wow…what an honor that was. I still can’t believe it. Kevin Bacon was so proud of me.
Romance Narrators: Tell us about an audiobook of which you're particularly proud.
Melissa: I’m very proud of the ‘Wicked Games’ series with JT Geissinger. I don’t know what it was, but everything about those books screamed ‘next level’ for me. The characters were so strong and each story just blew me away. JT is such an incredible writer.
Romance Narrators: What exciting projects do you have on the horizon?
Melissa: Ooooh what can I tease? In a couple of weeks, I’ll have a dual narration out with Aaron Shedlock by Lauren Landish who I just adore. It’s called ‘Scorpio’ and it is super delicious. Plus….Aaron. I mean…come on! There are a couple reverse harem books as part of a series soon that I’m not sure I can talk about in detail, but I’m looking forward to. Also, I’ll be diving into a supernatural/horror this summer which I’m very excited about. Hey, sometimes it’s okay to take a break from all these hormones!
