Janet Metzger, narrator, attended The Decatur Book Festival 2018, and has this review:
Every Labor Day weekend since 2005, tens of thousands of book lovers descend on my hometown, Decatur GA, for the AJC (Atlanta Journal Constitution) Decatur Book Festival.
This free event is the largest independent book festival in the country and features two full days of moderated author panels and book signings with 18 tracks and 20 mostly indoor staging areas covering every imaginable genre of writing.
Saturday featured more than 80 events and Sunday had over 50 to choose from. This is the second year I have been a featured panelist talking about storytelling through audiobooks, and each year the event was standing room only as avid readers became avid listeners for 45 minutes.
In between events, attendees can roam the closed-off streets of Decatur wandering among book sellers; independent book publishers, writing groups like Sisters in Crime and the Atlanta Writers Club have prominent tents in which writers read from and promote their work. And the food! Not your typical funnel cake, that’s for sure. Metro Atlanta is a foodie’s mecca, and street vendors know how to keep us happy during the festival.
Some of the romance writers featured in this year’s Decatur Book Festival included Emily Giffin (Something Borrowedand Something Blue) to talk about her newest novel All We Ever Wanted.
Three heavy hitters in Romance, Karen White (author, not our own narrator!), Beatriz Williams and Laura Willig talked about co-authoring The Glass Ocean.
Two bestselling authors of contemporary romance, Kathy Lyons and Tracy Solheim, dished on modern romance, strong heroines and the heroes who love them in their panel “Secret Service Agents and Bears, Oh My!”
A very popular panel titled “Empowering Women with Romance: The Literature of Hope and Resistance,” featured Vanessa Riley (The Bashful Bride) and Priscilla Oliveras (Their Perfect Melody) in which they write about independent women becoming fighters as much as lovers, taking on injustice – with a bit of swooning along the way.
And of course, being in the South, there had to be a panel called “Southern Gothic Lit: Intermingling Humor with Dark Truths.” This panel featured Sally Kilpatrick (Bless Her Heart) and Jamie Weisman (We Are Gathered) as they explore both the good and the bad all the while keeping the spotlight on the family. This is just a smattering of what you can experience, so make your plans now to attend next year’s AJC Decatur Book Festival. If you can’t wait, be sure to come to Atlanta in October for Moonlight and Magnolias, the conference sponsored by Georgia Romance Writers.
Bringing the experience of nearly four decades of theater, film and tv acting to audiobook narration, award-winning narrator Janet Metzger specializes in giving voice to characters from the South, from Appalachia to the Piedmont, Biloxi to the Carolina lowlands. She has deftly interpreted the many-faceted characters of Southern writers such as Sarah Addison Allen, Patti Callahan Henry, Peggy Webb and Sherryl Woods. Writers of Romance about older women (such as Patricia Sands and Kristy Woodson Harvey) praise her sensitive approach to and treatment of their work. Serving the intent of the author is always front and center in her work. In addition to acting and narration, Janet is an adjunct professor at Emory School of Law where she teaches courtroom persuasion and artful advocacy using theater arts and storytelling techniques.
